Help with IR Trip Sensor

I am designing a system to log people entering and exiting a building.
In the past I designed a musical staircase using an inappropriate sensor but this time around I MUST have accuracy and reliability.
 
I would like to use an IR transmitter and receiver mounted next to each other and then a reflective plate across from it. A similar set up is shown in this picture http://imgur.com/Y8kh3b2 where the combo Rx/Tx are highlighted in red and the reflector is highlighted in yellow.
What I'm looking for is an appropriate IR receiver that is designed for continuous signals because in the past I had one NOT designed for such and encountered issues.
For edification, this is being setup in a library and the end goal is to have occupancy data for use in a correlation study.

TL;DR: I need to identify appropriate IR receiver sensor to allow continuous IR receiving as well as a reflector plate that I can use.

You will mostlikely run the ir at a spcific frequency, and not just on.

on the reciever you will want to take a 555 timer to reset when that frequency is recieved. if ir is blocked, the 555 will complete instead of reset, thus giving you an output.  you then can have a computer read the positive signal, and add date and time it occured for anlysis.

Parents may hold childs hand and count as 1, and may leave as 2. so te data may have odd counts.
