What is a dielectric?

What is a dielectric? An insulator that is used between the plates of a capacitor is called a dielectric. Examples of dielectrics are air, mica, ceramic, polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene, paper etc. A solid dielectric layer provides much more capacitance than air. The ratio of this increased capacitance is called the “dielectric constant.”
